Golf Course InformationConceived in 1969, Thunder Hills Country Club was the vision of five individuals who wished to develop and build the second planned golf course community in the state of Iowa. Those five individuals were Gordon Cunningham, Peter Beaves, C.J. May, Jr., Frank Dunn, and Bob Frommelt, who was the first president of Thunder Hills Country Club. These five individuals were instrumental in the purchase of the Burds and Harris farms just east of Peosta, Iowa. Their vision was to build a residential community of paved streets with homes backing up to an eighteen hole golf course. Construction began in 1970 with the front nine being completed that same year. The design and construction of the golf course was performed by Midwest Irrigation of East Dubuque, Illinois owned by Gordon Cunningham and Peter Beaves. In 1971 the back nine and tennis courts were constructed. This championship golf course is situated on 50 acres with 25 acres of fairways and 5 acres of tees and greens. Additionally the course has four ponds and nearly 13 acres of wildflowers. Playing to par 71 the course is 6,365 yards from the black tees, 6,055 yards from the blue tees, 5550 yards from the gold tees and 5151 yards from the red tees. The course rating and slope is as follows for each respective tees
The course features Bentgrass/Poa tees and greens with a Bluegrass/Ryegrass/Poa blend on the fairways. In 1992 the course completed fairway irrigation and all 18 fairways, tees and greens are irrigated providing for outstanding course condition throughout the playing season ![]() |
